Director Biography – AURELIEN ACHACHE
Aurélien is fascinated by history and the power of cinema to explore themes centered around brotherhood, belief, and attraction. After attending film school, he ventured into the creation of music videos, allowing him to explore the language of film. He then directed his first short film, ‘’Separation’’ starring Paul Hamy, a space movie set in Soviet Union, exploring the mother and son bond. Member of the SRF, Aurélien is developing his third short film about the passage of time.
Director Statement
INCARNATIO is a film that was written, prepared and shot in the space of a few months, from November 2021 to August 2022. Its post-production phase began on November 1, 2022. In the preamble to this note, I will go back to some major stages of its production.
The plot takes place during the High Middle Ages, in the 8th century AD, and is inspired by the meeting between the Franks and the Saracens. To write his film, Aurélien consulted specialists including academician Michel Zink, and Laurent Jégou, lecturer in medieval history at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The choice to shoot this film in the languages of the time is also part of this search for authenticity and immersion. Always for the sake of authenticity, this film has been entirely shot in natural light: all the lighting comes from candles, oil lamps, fireplace and torch fire. The outdoor scenes were shot on time between
lecturer in medieval history in dog and wolf. In terms of funding, the film is entirely self-produced, thanks to the contribution of Tangible Films and crowfunding via the Proarti platform. In order for us to receive the funds, Proarti had to be a co-producer of the film (but not a delegate). Hence the partnership and co-production agreement signed with them. It is therefore an underfunded film, shot with a fully volunteer team. To supplement this financing, we put our overhead costs related to the recovery of the company’s VAT in participation, over the periods from the beginning of the prep to the end of post-production and delivery of the film.
The shooting took place between Normandy at the Hambye Abbey (Manche 50) and Switzerland in the Valais.
